Move from Physical to Virtual with CloneZilla

Just a side note for when I forget how I fixed this… When using CloneZilla you can capture server images and redeploy them unless there are hardware differences. To fix issues with hardware changes between physical server hardware and VMware here are my fix actions: Windows 2003 Enterprise Change the hard drive to IDE from SCSI. Windows will blue screen when you boot after image deployment since it cannot find the drive to boot from. You will get the error: 0x0000007b After booting windows 2003 you can then install the BusLogic or LSI SCSI drivers Red Hat Linux 5 Boot with the first CD of the install set and instead of an install, use linux rescue. Once booted chroot /mnt/sysimage Blank out the /etc/modprobe.conf mv /boot/initrd-2.6.18-20.el5.img /boot/initrd-2.6.18-20.el5.img.orig mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.6.18-20.el5.img 2.6.18-20.el5 reboot Windows XP Change the hard drive to IDE from SCSI. Windows XP in the default install does not include the two SCSI adapters VMware supports, BusLogic or LSI Logic. During the CloneZilla restore you are given a few options. The ones to select to ensure a successful MBR restore are: -t1 -j1 These settings will allow you to move your physical clonezilla images to vmware.

Airborne Warfare

The mark of a good system administrator is laziness. I mean this in the sense that laziness in the computing world fuels automation and thereby lower costs. In this quest for automation it is my belief that we have opened ourselves to a real danger in the air. Most computers by default have running applications. Wether they be in the taskbar or a Linux daemon, our machines are set to take care of their users. The biggest offenders are communication based services. Programs that login to our Lotus Smarttime, Windows Messenger, or Jabber corporate servers transmit userid and password information upon recognizing network connections. Email programs set to auto-check for mail ping into the ether in search of new messages to delight the warm body clicking away on its keyboard. ...

The iPhone saga continues

AT&T Customer for 5 years or more — Check AT&T Stock Holder — Check Original iPhone Owner — Check AT&T Business Enterprise Customer — Check What does all that buy you? A big fat cup of nothing. While in DC for business I did the unthinkable and waited outside of an Apple Store to buy an iPhone 3G. The line was wrapped around the front of the store and I doubted my chances of being afforded the “privilege” of purchasing a phone. It was my lucky day as many left the line after being informed that only the white edition was in stock. The Apple Employee wandered towards me armed with his Wireless Symbol Palm computer to verify if I was eligible. After a few missteps inputting information (there is no backspace on the device) we were off. Turns out I am not eligible to purchase a new iPhone from Apple. Why you might ask yourself? I am a business user…soak on that for a minute. I am a business user and therefore am relegated to the second class HELL HOLE that is AT&T Stores. After waiting in line I was left speechless. Here is the background as to why: ...

OpenSolaris Shortcomings

I want to like OpenSolaris. I love compiling away on my Sun Machines at the house. The simple fact is though the “Open” is a misnomer of great proportions. What makes me excited about OpenSolaris is the lineage it stems from. For UNIX admins everywhere, it is truly one of the last of the old guard. HP-UX, Tru64, and the host of other dead UNIX OS showcase how much impact the BSD and Linux world has had on mainstream POSIX. ...
